View the draft designs for these iconic community assets
We’re revitalising the historic Michael Tuck Stand and Glenferrie Oval in Hawthorn.
We invite you to have your say on:
- the draft designs for the revitalised Michael Tuck Stand Community Hub
- the renewed sportsground lighting for Glenferrie Oval.
In August and September 2023, we asked our community to have their say on the draft Vision and Design Brief (PDF 1.81 MB) for the refurbishment of the Michael Tuck Stand and Glenferrie Oval.
Thank you to the 475 people who helped shape the Vision and Design Brief. We’re inviting your feedback again to make sure these iconic community assets fulfil their full potential as a community hub for sport, programs, events and activities. Let us know what you think of the draft designs.
How to have your say
Michael Tuck Stand community hub and sports pavilion
The spaces inside the Michael Tuck Stand have been designed to be functional and adaptable for a range of community uses, while respecting the historical significance of the building.
The scale of this wonderful building spans three levels.
Select the hot spots below to explore the draft design for each level:
Overview

Ground level

On the ground level, you’ll find facilities to support community sport and multipurpose and rehearsal spaces:
- Community sporting spaces: unisex change rooms with showers and toilets, a dedicated first aid room, storage spaces and public toilets.
- Multipurpose and rehearsal spaces: there are 2 shared spaces, which can be used as multipurpose and band rehearsal spaces. There are also storage spaces for band equipment.
- There is a kiosk with an outdoor space looking out on to Glenferrie Oval. We will explore interest in this becoming a takeaway style café in the future.
- Improving the land use directly in front of stand: we are exploring ways to improve the use of this land to support community activity and access.
Promenade (Level 1)

- Once a grand walkway for crowds entering the grandstand, this large, unique historic space was discovered during repair works. The draft design aims to unlock its potential for a range of community uses.
- The promenade level provides multipurpose spaces to support community wellbeing, recreational, cultural and arts activities. This reflects what we heard from the community during our previous consultation. Read the report (PDF 1.39 MB)
Grandstand (Level 2)

- We're creating a new enclosed multipurpose community space in the upper section of the grandstand, behind the existing seating.
- The existing grandstand can’t be used in full for spectator seating, as current safety codes limit capacity to 680 people. This is due to the width of the grandstand’s staircases and the need for safe emergency access. The multipurpose community space will enhance the use of this area for broader community benefit.
- The space, which features a functional kitchen, will be used for small to medium-sized community activities, meetings, social events and functions. There will potentially be an outdoor balcony attached to the space.

Renewing the oval lighting
We’re upgrading Glenferrie Oval to improve the sportsground for community level sport. This includes upgrading the sportsground lighting to meet AFL community level standards.
There are 2 current light poles on the eastern side which are 20 metres high. The lights that were on the western side were removed when the Ferguson Stand was demolished. We’ll remove the remaining light poles and replace them with 4 new light poles, which are 30 metres high.
The lighting design meets the relevant Australian standard for sportsground lighting, including minimising light spill into nearby areas.

Previous community consultations
We completed 2 stages of community consultation.
Stage 1
The first stage ran from April to May 2023. After we demolished the Ferguson Stand, there was an opportunity to develop the new open space. We asked our community for feedback on the draft landscape plan for the new open space. We used the feedback to develop the final landscape design.

Stage 2
The second stage of consultation ran from August to September 2023. We asked our community for feedback on the draft Vision and Design Brief for the refurbishment of Michael Tuck Stand and Glenferrie Oval. On 11 December 2023, Councillors received a report on the community feedback and adopted the final Vision and Design Brief.

Future use of Glenferrie Oval and Michael Tuck Stand
After the upgrades, Glenferrie Oval will become a shared hub for junior and women’s community sport. This decision is based on feedback we received from our community during consultation.
In an exciting move for women’s sport in Boroondara, Glenferrie Oval will host women’s senior amateur football matches on Saturday afternoons during the winter season.
In mid-2024, we put a callout to community groups interested in using the proposed internal spaces of the Michael Tuck Stand. 16 groups offering a range of diverse activities and programs for our community expressed their interest. We’re now working with the shortlisted groups to gather more information and understand how the successful groups could best work together when the building reopens.
