Get ready to climb, balance and explore!

We heard that many children from the nearby kindergarten love visiting the playground with their friends before and after care.

Our community told us they’d like to see more variety in the new design – especially climbing, slides and swing – which is why the new design is all about movement, challenges and adventure.

Our community shared some great ideas for the new design, but there are a few things that we can't include.

This is because the playground at Trafalgar Road Reserve is classified as a local playground in our Playground Development Strategy. A playground’s category determines the budget, design focus and scope of the upgrade. Read more about this on Upgrading Boroondara’s playgrounds page.

1. Water and sand play – these features can be found in district and regional playground designs.

2. Shade – under our Shade Policy 2017-2027, some shade structures like outdoor sails aren’t in scope for local playground upgrades. While the reserve has large, mature trees around the playground, we’ll be planting 9 additional trees to help increase natural shade overtime.

3. Barbecues and public toilets – these can be found in district and regional playgrounds and are designed for longer visits.

4. Exercise equipment and basketball hoop – due to the current scope and budget, we’re focusing on upgrading the playground equipment, improving seating and enhancing the lawn area. Exercise equipment and a basketball hoop are not included in this stage of works, but could be considered as part of future park improvements.

Relocation of the playground

When we build the new playground, we plan to move it to the northern pocket of the reserve, closer to the car park and separated by a fence. Doing so means we can:

  • improve accessibility to the playground
  • maximise the available open space in the reserve for everyone in our community to enjoy.

Stage 1 community consultation (June and July 2025)

In June and July 2025, we asked you to tell us:

  • what you love about this playground
  • what could be improved
  • what you’d like to see in the new playground.

Who we heard from

We heard from 57 community members in the following ways:

  • 34 completed the online survey
  • 14 children submitted drawings with us of their dream playground
  • 6 comments were collected during the drop-in session
  • 3 emails were received.

Of those:

  • 82% were female
  • 21% were children under the age of 14
  • 76% live in Camberwell.

What you told us

  • The slides and swings are the most popular play items, but you’d like to see more choices. We’ve made sure improved versions of these elements are included in the draft design.
  • You value the variety of play options for younger and older children.
  • You want us to keep the bright colours in the playground design.
