We want to hear from parents and caregivers with children aged 0 to 5 years.
Share your thoughts and experiences about the kindergarten enrolment and allocation process in Boroondara. If your children will reach kindergarten age in the next few years, what do you anticipate your preferences will be when applying to local kindergartens?
Council’s role in kindergarten placements
Kindergarten is delivered across Boroondara in different types of settings, including at:
Having various kindergarten settings enables you to choose the format that suits your family, depending on your requirements and circumstances.
Different local councils manage their kindergarten allocations differently. In Boroondara, Council doesn’t run kindergartens but we do manage the application process for one type of kindergarten, called standalone or sessional kindergartens.
Sessional kindergartens are purpose-built centres. Often managed by volunteer parent committees, they run their programs during set hours, often shorter than a business day and for 2 to 4 days per week.
We will also ask you about your use of childcare alongside your sessional kindergarten hours. This will help us understand how many hours you plan to use sessional kindergarten for your children.
Victorian Government reforms
The Victorian Government, through the Department of Education, manages the early childhood education policies across the state. They have introduced rolling reforms to early childhood education which will continue to be implemented over the next few years. These are legislated changes, for example the hours of kindergarten available for different age groups.
Our consultation won’t ask for your views on the legislated changes because these changes aren't managed by councils.
