Council decides on new way forward for Kew Library’s redevelopment

25 February 2025

At last night’s Council meeting, a report was presented to councillors which included alternative options for the redevelopment of Kew Library.

At the Council meeting, the decision was made to:

  • keep the existing library building
  • cease the contract with our architects (who were working on designs based on demolishing the current library and rebuilding a new one)
  • look at delivering important maintenance work in stages
  • develop a master plan to guide longer-term improvements to Kew Library and surrounds.

All maintenance work and the development of the master plan are subject to Council’s budget process.

Why the change?

This follows a decision made at the Council meeting on Monday 9 December 2024:

  • directing our architects to pause work on designs for the new Kew Library
  • requesting a report on the implications of varying our architect’s contract and exploring alternative options for the redevelopment of Kew Library.

What’s happening now?

The first stage of maintenance work would include:

  • replacing the roof and sewer
  • upgrading to electric heating and cooling
  • upgrading RFID equipment (to enable bulk book returns)
  • upgrading the electrical supply and switchboard.

The second stage of maintenance work would include:

  • upgrading lighting
  • replacing the library shelving and carpet
  • installing ceiling fans
  • improving access to power points and Wi-Fi.

The master plan would aim to deliver on the key themes our community told us were important through the development of the Vision and Design Brief.

We’ll keep our community updated when more information, budget and timelines are confirmed.
