About the consultation

Melbourne Water is updating its flood models across Melbourne, including for Boroondara, to help everyone understand and be better prepared for floods.

To help inform the new modelling, they’re asking the community to share your knowledge of flooding in your local area – particularly on or near your property.

What are flood models?

Flood models identify which areas are most likely to flood, how quickly and how deep the water may get.

They are used to:

  • ensure the community is aware of their flood risk and what to do in a flood event
  • update Municipal Flood Emergency Management Plans and Local Flood Guides
  • update planning scheme controls to ensure planning and building decisions take flood risk into consideration
  • inform long-term, sustainable, flood mitigation options.

Melbourne Water uses the best available data and tools to build their flood models – but your local knowledge can help make them even better by ensuring the models reflect what happens on the ground.

How will the information be used?

Your insights will help inform the new flood models prior to finalising.

Modelling experts will use the information to check their model against people’s experiences and determine if further investigation is needed.

The information received during the community input phase will be added to existing Council, Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, and Melbourne Water data to create comprehensive flood maps.
