Camberwell pop-up spaces

27 October 2022

How can we improve our street spaces through placemaking? We’re testing 2 sites at Camberwell Junction to find out.

Each new temporary space will respond to the site’s particular issues and opportunities. You’re invited to share your feedback on the pop-ups once they’re installed in early December.

Pedestrian safety has been a concern for a busy laneway near Camberwell Primary School. The laneway links Butler Street car park with a street crossing on Camberwell Road. For a trial period, we’re going to close the laneway to road traffic. We’ll also add vibrant ground designs and seating for kids, parents, shoppers and workers to enjoy safely. We’re trying to make better use of the space by making it more pedestrian-friendly, so moving around is easier and amenity is improved.

The second site is a busy pedestrian area near Camberwell railway station, at the end of Railway Parade. It’s underused and could do with a lift, so we’re installing seats and a ground stencil to help bring it to life and create more places for people.

Guiding the pop-ups is our Camberwell Junction placemaking research, analysis and consultation. We want to test and learn how we can make localised improvements to underused Council spaces.

Each trial is designed to improve the amenity of an unloved public space – but does it? Please tell us.

Once installed, have your say on our Camberwell pop-up page.
